'seaside boomerang' by tokyo-based architecture firm atelier haretoke is a two-storey weekend villa
located on the edge of a beach in isumi, chiba prefecture, japan. taking advantage of the sweeping
panoramic view of the pacific, the design features a kink in the floor plan that visually 'cradles' around
the site, securing multiple vantage points that change throughout the house.

sitting on a sloped site, the weekend dwelling utilizes a stilted platform to extend a large L-shaped
outdoor terrace towards the waters. the inside of the boomerang form features a double-height stretch
of glazing that secures a wide visual scope of the surrounding landscape. serving as an open interface
between the interior and the outdoor terrace, the transparent elevation dissolves the boundary between
the architecture and its natural site.

conceived as a single volume, the interior accommodates a large open space at the heart of
its layout. the presence of the ocean is projected into the lounge which benefits from
the transparent facade and wood deck. the kitchen and bathroom are housed beyond the bend
in the plan which creates a sense of definition without the aid of full partition walls.
under the inclined roof line, a loft level is inserted for a bedroom which overlooks the
lounge space below.

(1) the site is 80 minutes from tokyo by car and 20 meters from the pacific
(2) after achieving a shape that opens up to the ocean as much as possible,
a parking space is created on the town side while a garden is inserted on the ocean side
(3) the plan is extruded into a two-storey volume
(4) the unnecessary volume of the form is cut away which resulted in an inclined roof
(5) a wooden deck redefines the garden while serving as an outdoor living room that is half-enclosed by the building
(6) windows ideal for views, lighting and ventilation is arranged on the facade
